INDYCAR to Race in Barcelona in 2027, Bringing Palou Home
INDYCAR Barcelona 2027 is now a reality: the North American open-wheel series will race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on July 18, 2027. The announcement, made Friday, marks the series’ first European event since 2007 and its first race outside North America since 2013. The venue, located in Montmelo, about 45 minutes from Barcelona, will host a multiyear agreement reported as a 10-year deal with early-exit clauses.
A homecoming for Palou

For Alex Palou, the race is personal. The four-time defending INDYCAR champion grew up outside Barcelona and has won five titles in the series. He said he is excited to race at home and that fans will enjoy the event, adding that the show will be strong. Palou’s presence gives the Barcelona race a local star at the height of his career.
Track history and F1 rotation
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya opened in 1991 and hosted its first Formula 1 race the same year. The F1 layout measures 2.894 miles and has 14 turns. The track is absent from the 2027 F1 calendar due to venue rotation, creating an opening for INDYCAR. Whether the series will modify the layout or race distance remains undecided, and at least one support series is planned, though the specific series has not been chosen.
Promoter shouldering the logistics
Mark Miles, president and CEO of Penske Entertainment Corp., INDYCAR’s parent entity, described the financial arrangement as a traditional promoter-INDYCAR deal. The promoter will cover air and sea freight for cars and equipment, as well as flights and hotels for approximately 900 team crew members and officials. Ticket sales and event viability also fall to the promoter. The identity of the promoter has not been disclosed. Miles said the event differs from the Freedom 250, where Penske Entertainment served as promoter.
No European swing, but expansion possible
Miles was careful to frame Barcelona as a standalone addition rather than the start of a broader European tour. He said the focus is on Barcelona, not a European swing, and that INDYCAR will remain fundamentally North American with a European landing pad. He did not rule out expanding the schedule beyond 17 races, and additional international races are likely in another region, not Europe. The series last raced in Europe in the Netherlands in 2007 and last raced outside North America in Brazil in 2013.
Schedule changes and oval priorities
The 2027 schedule will not include Nashville or Washington, D.C., and Barcelona was the only new venue announced Friday. INDYCAR continues to prioritize adding oval races. Five oval races at four venues remain without Nashville, and Doug Boles, INDYCAR President, said many ovals want races, with attendance and promotion being key factors. The series may also consider a Spaniard exemption that could allow a 26th car entry for the Barcelona race, Boles said, though no decision has been made.
What’s still undecided
Beyond the date and venue, several details remain open: the exact race distance, any track modifications for INDYCAR, the support series, the identity of the promoter, ticket prices and sales details, and the specific terms of the early-exit clauses. The series has not ruled out expanding beyond 17 races, but no additional ovals have been named. For now, the Barcelona race stands as a singular addition to the 2027 calendar, with Palou’s homecoming as its centerpiece.
