Musk’s Reported $1 Billion Skydance Bet Ties Him to a Media Giant in the Making
An Elon Musk Skydance investment of roughly $1 billion has been reported by Semafor, placing the technology billionaire inside the ownership structure of a media company that has just taken shape through one of the industry’s largest combinations. The report, published on October 22, 2026, described the money as an equity contribution made around the same time as other investors put capital into the business.
What the Report Says About the Investment

Semafor’s account puts the size of Musk’s commitment at approximately $1 billion, though the exact amount beyond that figure, the precise date it was made and the terms attached to it have not been disclosed. His ownership stake in Skydance is also unknown, and there has been no confirmation of the investment from Musk or from the company itself.
The reporting indicates the contribution is intended to give Skydance a financial boost as it pursues two goals: reducing costs and lifting its stock price. Skydance did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TechCrunch.
Laurene Powell Jobs, a Skydance board member, also contributed equity around the same period, according to the report. The size of her contribution was not specified.
A Company Built on the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery Deal

Skydance’s emergence follows Paramount’s completion of a $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, a transaction finalized a few weeks before the Semafor report. The combined company brings together major streaming services and a broad set of television networks under one roof.
David Ellison and Ynon Kreiz serve as co-CEOs. Their immediate tasks include integrating Paramount+ and HBO Max, two streaming platforms now inside the same corporate structure. They also oversee a network portfolio that includes CBS, CNN, MTV, TBS, Comedy Central and Food Network.
The integration work comes alongside a cost-reduction pledge. Skydance has committed to $6 billion in cuts over three years, a target that will shape how the co-CEOs manage the newly combined operations.
Why Musk's Relationship With Larry Ellison Matters

Musk’s reported move into Skydance fits a pattern of business ties between him and Larry Ellison, the Oracle co-founder and David Ellison’s father. Musk has publicly praised the Ellisons, and his connection to Larry Ellison stretches back years.
In 2018, Larry Ellison invested in Tesla, and Musk appointed him to the Tesla board that same year. In 2022, Larry Ellison put $1 billion into Musk’s purchase of Twitter.
Those earlier transactions provide the backdrop for the reported Skydance contribution, though the report does not describe any direct role for Larry Ellison in the new investment. What remains clear is the scale of the reported commitment and the media landscape it touches: a newly combined company managing streaming platforms, cable networks and a multiyear cost-cutting program, with Musk now reported among its equity backers.
