Christian Yelich Brewers captain is no longer an informal description. On Sept. 26, 2025, the Milwaukee Brewers named Yelich the first captain in franchise history, making the announcement during a team meeting before the penultimate game of the regular season.
In the clubhouse, the title landed as confirmation rather than revelation. Sal Frelick said Yelich had been filling the role long before he received the ‘C.’ Joey Ortiz put it just as plainly, saying no one would question Yelich’s captain status.
A decade of production and presence
Yelich arrived in Milwaukee in 2018 and immediately turned in an MVP season, hitting 36 home runs. A year later he hit 44 homers, stole 30 bases and led the majors with a 1.100 OPS. In 2020, he signed a nine-year, $215 million extension that tied his future to the organization.
The team’s record since his arrival is difficult to match. The Brewers made the playoffs eight times in nine years with Yelich, won six division titles and set a franchise record with 103 regular-season wins in 2025. Before he joined, Milwaukee had missed the postseason six straight seasons.
His individual numbers have changed. Yelich, now 34 and the oldest player on the roster, hit below league average in 2025 for the first time in his career as age and back issues took a toll. He no longer runs as he did in 2019. Yet his value to the clubhouse has not faded.
The work behind the scenes
Teammates describe a leader whose influence shows up in details that do not appear in a box score. Frelick credited Yelich with mentoring him on baserunning before his big-league debut, and said the team’s culture was built on Yelich’s back. Ortiz said Yelich helped him mentally during a slump, while Garrett Mitchell called him an open book for questions, someone who has experienced ups and downs and is willing to talk about them.
David Hamilton said the team goes through Yelich and referred to him as the head honcho. Andrew Vaughn said everyone looks up to him and that he keeps the team together. Jake Bauers described Yelich as extremely humble, someone who cares about the team rather than himself.
Manager Pat Murphy said Yelich has been at the forefront of the best record in baseball over the last three years and is more important to the process than anyone knows. Brandon Woodruff, the only other remaining player from the 2018 team besides Yelich, said Yelich means a ton to the city and the organization.
Postseason poise under pressure
Yelich’s 2025 postseason offered a compact portrait of his role. He served as designated hitter in all four NLDS games against the San Diego Padres and recorded at least one hit in each. In NLCS Game 1, he was benched against left-hander Tarik Skubal but remained supportive. He returned in Game 2 and delivered a go-ahead two-run hit after Jake Bauers drew a 12-pitch walk, knocking Yoshinobu Yamamoto out in the third inning.
Before accepting the captaincy, Yelich asked Robin Yount for his permission, a gesture that acknowledged the franchise’s history. He is one of only three active MLB captains, along with Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees and Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals.
Milwaukee’s 2025 season carried the franchise to the World Series, where it stood four wins from its first title. The Brewers had last reached the Fall Classic in 1982. Yelich remains a complementary player on a team built around contact and speed, but his leadership is central to the club’s identity. As he put it, leadership is doing what is needed to win.
