Fusion Startup CFS Gets $85 Million in CHIPS Act Funds — and Washington Takes a Stake

Commonwealth Fusion Systems has secured a $85 million Commonwealth Fusion Systems CHIPS Act award from the U.S. Department of Commerce, the company announced Thursday. The funding is intended to advance semiconductor research and manufacturing capacity in the United States — specifically the kind of specialized chips and power electronics that a fusion power plant will need. As part of the terms, the U.S. government receives a stake in CFS.

Why a fusion company is getting chip money

Fusion power is often described in terms of reactors and plasma, but the machinery around the reaction depends on rugged electronics. CFS says the award supports five initiatives aimed at building that industrial base. The company is simultaneously racing to complete Sparc, a demonstration reactor it aims to turn on sometime next year. Sparc is not a commercial power plant. It is a proof point — a device meant to show that the underlying physics and engineering can work at scale.

Building one reactor is one challenge. Building a fleet of commercial plants is another, and it requires durable power electronics and a reliable supply chain. The CHIPS Act funding is directed at that longer horizon.

Four technologies in focus

The brief lists five initiatives but details four explicitly. The first centers on silicon carbide power electronics. Silicon carbide is a semiconductor material used to manage high voltages, and it already appears in LEDs, electric vehicles, cell phone base stations and data centers. In a fusion machine, it would help drive the superconducting magnets that confine plasma inside the reactor.

The second initiative covers next-generation radio-frequency power generators. These devices heat the fusion fuel. The third involves advanced electronics for faster reactor control, built to withstand radiation. Radiation-hardened electronics could extend the lifespan of a plant’s control systems, which in turn could reduce operating costs over time.

The fourth initiative adapts AI hardware — such as GPUs and TPUs — for use in power plants. The brief does not specify how that adaptation would work.

Sorbom: stronger supply chain, faster path to the grid

Brandon Sorbom, co-founder and chief science officer at CFS, said the award means a more capable and economical power plant and a stronger U.S. supply chain. He also said the funding improves U.S. chip and power electronics industries and accelerates fusion progress toward the electrical grid.

The government’s equity stake is part of the award terms, though the size of that stake was not disclosed. Nor is the total cost of the five initiatives, the exact date of Sparc’s turn-on, or whether the award carries milestones or conditions.

What the award does not settle

Fusion startups are in a race to complete their first demonstration devices, and CFS is no exception. The Sparc timeline — targeted for next year — is the company’s next major checkpoint. The CHIPS Act money is aimed at the supply chain that would follow a successful demonstration, not at Sparc itself.

For now, the award gives CFS both capital and a government partner. It also gives the Commerce Department a financial interest in the company’s progress. The fifth initiative remains unspecified in the company’s announcement.
