New York Archdiocese Approaches $800M Settlement With 1,300 Abuse Survivors

The Catholic Archdiocese of New York is closing in on a New York archdiocese settlement of at least $800 million with more than 1,300 people who say they were abused by clergy members and lay leaders, according to details reported by the New York Times. The agreement would resolve a legal battle that has stretched across years and would reportedly lower the risk that the archdiocese would seek bankruptcy protection.

Two Paths to Compensation

The settlement is not yet final, and few details remain to be worked out. Claimants are expected to choose between two options: accept a fixed payment of $250,000, or go through an allocation procedure that requires a detailed form and determines an individual payout. The number of survivors selecting each path has not been disclosed.

Paul Mones, an attorney representing plaintiffs, said the settlement offers closure to older survivors, many of whom are in their 60s, 70s and 80s. He also said the process provides some measure of justice.

Legal History Behind the Claims

The path to this settlement was shaped by two court developments. In 2006, the New York state court of appeals refused to waive the statute of limitations for older abuse allegations, blocking many claims. In 2019, the Child Victims Act opened a window for civil suits until a plaintiff turned 55. Thousands of suits followed against the archdiocese, the Boy Scouts, Jeffrey Epstein and others.

Fundraising, Asset Sales and Bankruptcy Risk

To fund the settlement, the archdiocese began raising $300 million in 2025 for the 1,300 survivors and has sold assets and cut costs. The settlement is expected to reduce the risk of a diocese bankruptcy, a step the Archdiocese of New Orleans has already taken amid similar scandals.

Archbishop Ronald A. Hicks emailed priests about the settlement, describing it as nearing healing and reconciliation for victim-survivors.

Other Dioceses Face Litigation

The New York case is part of a wider pattern. In Chicago, lawsuits filed this month allege the archdiocese knew of a priest sex ring, according to WTTW News. The Baltimore archdiocese is in mediation with survivors, WBAL reported. Mones also represents survivors in suits against the archdioceses of Buffalo, San Diego and San Francisco.

The final settlement total above $800 million, the timing of a final agreement, and the specific assets sold or costs cut have not been disclosed.
