Andreessen Horowitz Renames Crypto Unit to a16z Frontier as Mandate Widens

Andreessen Horowitz has renamed its digital asset practice a16z Frontier, a change announced Thursday, October 22, 2026, that widens the unit’s investment scope beyond crypto alone. The practice, which has operated as a16z Crypto since 2018, will now pursue opportunities in artificial intelligence, robotics and new human-machine networks while keeping crypto inside its strategy.

A practice built over five funds

Since its launch in 2018, the unit has raised nearly $10 billion across five funds. That capital base made it one of the more prominent venture efforts tied to digital assets, and it produced a notable early win in Coinbase, which the practice backed. The fund history gives the rebranded group a substantial platform from which to broaden its reach.

Why the crypto label is giving way

Crypto investing has lost prominence in the venture landscape, and firms have struggled to push blockchain use beyond financial and speculative applications. The rename reflects that reality. By adopting a broader technology focus, Andreessen Horowitz is signaling that its next chapter will not be defined solely by digital assets, even as crypto remains part of the plan.

Dixon stays at the helm

Chris Dixon continues to lead the practice. He is joined by general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet. Dixon also wrote a blog post on blockchain and network economics, outlining a view in which blockchain could give new networks native economic capabilities. That thesis now sits alongside AI, robotics and other network-focused areas under the Frontier banner.

A departure from the original crypto team

Ali Yahya, who joined in 2017 as the crypto strategy’s first investor, has left the firm, according to The Information. His exit comes as the practice reframes itself. The exact reason for his departure was not disclosed, and it remains unclear whether the name change or the broadened strategy will affect the existing portfolio.

What changes and what stays the same

The most visible change is the name: a16z Crypto is now a16z Frontier. The mandate has expanded to cover AI, robotics and new networks. Crypto is not being abandoned. The group’s leaders have not announced the size or timing of any new fund, nor have they specified the new investments they plan to make. For now, the rebrand marks a wider technology focus for a practice that spent years building one of venture capital’s largest crypto franchises.
