Warhound Launches With $200M to Engineer Working Dogs for Military and Emergency Roles

Warhound, a new startup that plans to genetically engineer dogs for military and emergency work, emerged from stealth on Thursday with $200 million in Warhound funding and a $1.2 billion valuation. The company’s dogs do not yet exist, but the venture already has backing from prominent investors and a partnership that pairs biotechnology with defense hardware.

A supply problem with deep roots

The pitch rests on a supply chain that has become increasingly fragile. More than 80% of U.S. military working dogs are sourced from Europe, and fewer than half of those European dogs are fit for service. The supply of suitable dogs is declining, and the U.S. is leaning more heavily on foreign sources as a result.

Many dogs that enter training fail because of inherited health problems. Poor eyesight, cancer risk, hip dysplasia and muscle atrophy are among the issues that can end a working dog’s career before it begins. Warhound co-founder Ben Lamm argues that these are not merely operational setbacks; they are genetic problems that can be addressed at the source.

Gene editing and a biobank

Warhound’s approach begins with cell lines from Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds, two breeds commonly used in military and police roles. Those cell lines have been placed in a biobank. The team plans to add genes associated with performance and remove genes linked to undesirable traits.

Lamm, who founded Colossal Biosciences, believes dogs could be enhanced for health, longevity, speed, agility and smell. The exact gene edits planned have not been disclosed, and the long-term health outcomes of such edits remain unknown.

Colossal owns equity in Warhound and licenses technology to the company. The biotech firm is known for de-extinction projects involving species such as the dodo and the mammoth, and it uses AI and acquired technology for gene cloning and copying. Its cloning partner, Viagen, will work with Warhound to clone the dogs. Lamm said Viagen has a high cloning success rate, and Colossal already uses Viagen technology for endangered species protection.

The first batch of dogs is about to be cloned and incubated, with births expected early next year. Warhound hopes service can ideally begin within two years.

Anduril’s gear and the limits of genetics

Anduril, the defense technology company founded by Palmer Luckey, will supply software and hardware such as vests and goggles. The gear is intended to improve situational awareness and coordination between dogs and handlers. Lamm described sensor-equipped bulletproof vests that send data to handlers, adding protection outside the dog’s genetics.

Luckey is a partner in Warhound but owns no equity, according to Lamm. The two met about a year ago at a conference, where Luckey argued that more should be done for military working dogs. Lamm began researching working dog breeding after that meeting.

Buyers, pricing and welfare

Warhound has not set pricing for its dogs. Target buyers include first responders, the Department of Defense, military service groups and police. The company said it has briefed many government groups, though the specific approval status was not detailed.

Each dog will be trained like a standard military working dog and managed by its buyer. Warhound is working with the American Humane Society on training certification, and retired dogs are hoped to enter the Society’s Military Working Dog Reunification Program.

The funding round included Sequoia, 8VC, Corner Ventures and In-Q-Tel, the CIA-backed venture investor. The size of the round and the valuation place Warhound among the better-capitalized entrants in a niche that has historically depended on foreign breeders and traditional training pipelines.

For now, the company’s dogs are not yet born, and the path from cloned puppies to certified service animals remains long. But the launch signals a bet that biotechnology can solve a problem that has vexed military planners for years: finding enough healthy, capable dogs to do the work.
